Reporting to the Operations Director, this role is responsible for the manufacture and manufacturing engineering function. Delivery of all products on time, to quality and regulatory requirements, and technical leadership, resource, and workload planning.

The role involves management of a team of multi skilled, diverse operational operatives on the Portland factory (both production and engineering), and off-site teams working in the UK and worldwide. Operation responsibilities cover a wide range of both Production and Engineering management, covering composite materials, including glass and carbon fibre resin systems, polyurethanes and all associated pattern and mould making.  The role is responsible for the management, supervision and control of manufacturing production, processes, and people to meet Company targets.

Quality and Compliance

  • Drive to achieve ‘Right First Time’ manufacturing, ensuring zero defects to the customer, whilst minimising Internal rejects to budgeted level or below
  • Ensure all documentations complies with AS9100 standards, and underlying engineering procedures are adhered too.
  • All data is recorded accurately and in line with company policies and systems, and is policed (audited) periodically


  • Productivity is achieved to plan, whilst in line with budgeted expectations
  • Lean / CI is used for improvement or cost alignment activities
  • Provide technical support to wider business teams, in bid / new work initiatives, tooling or manufacturing feasibility / Concerns
  • Assist Project teams in line with customer deadlines, whilst engineering team achieve set KPIs for Business


  • Achieve business’s “On-Time-In-Full’ delivery goal
  • Drive order delivery to meet contract dates, and own the escalation of issues to resolution
  • Ensure that 5S is championed, maintained, and audited.
  • Support composite development, in line with production requirements / bottlenecks
  • Develop processes to a production steady state standard that meets specification and design intent
  • Create manufacturing Information sheets, route cards, BOMs, and data in accordance with company standards, using CAD, and PLM data management tools


  • Escalate or process capability, disciplinary and grievance issues as appropriate
  • Work with Operations team, to identify skill requirements and put training plans in place accordingly
  • Champion Continuous Improvement within the team, encouraging improvement ideas
  • Manage Performance and Absence (informally and formally) including PDRs and Absence Review Meetings



  • >5 Years’ experience, in a Manufacturing management position
  • >3 years’ experience Managing an Engineering team
  • Relevant technical and manufacturing qualification or relevant experience (HNC / PgD / MBA)
  • Proven Results driven and quality focused, with a flexible attitude to workload
  • Continuous Improvement, zero defect and customer focused mindset
  • High levels of accuracy, with an attention to detail
  • Confident and able to communicate at all levels
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to communicate at all levels
  • Ability to develop successful working relationships, work on own initiative, and as part of a team
  • Computer literate, windows based, and 3D model based definition (CATIA preferred)
  • Understanding of Aerospace / Defence, control requirements configuration with specific experience of composite material processing and component production processes
  • Experienced in scientific experimentation and reporting
