Embedded Software / Firmware Engineer

Location: Farnborough, Hampshire

The Opportunity

Copello is working with a leading technology and engineering organisation to recruit Embedded Software / Firmware Engineers to join a specialist, multidisciplinary engineering team based in Farnborough.

This is an opportunity to work on innovative technology solutions for complex engineering challenges, contributing across the full development lifecycle — from early-stage research, concept development and prototyping through to testing, validation and full product development.

We are keen to hear from engineers at a range of experience levels who have a strong foundation in embedded software development, with opportunities to broaden their expertise across FPGA development, electronics and associated technologies.

The successful candidates will be curious, creative engineers who enjoy solving challenging technical problems, exploring emerging technologies and developing practical solutions in a highly technical environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and test embedded software and firmware for specialist engineering applications.

  • Contribute to research, feasibility studies, prototyping and technology development.

  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team spanning software, FPGA and hardware engineering.

  • Investigate new technologies and identify opportunities to improve technical capability and performance.

  • Support the development of solutions from initial concept through to implementation.

  • Apply innovative thinking to complex engineering challenges.

  • Contribute to the secure handling of information and compliance with relevant regulatory requirements.

Essential Skills and Experience

Candidates should have experience in software development across one or more of the following areas:

  • C and/or C++.

  • Rust.

  • Python.

  • Embedded Linux.

  • Bare-metal microcontroller development.

  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning.

We welcome applications from engineers with a strong core skill set and an interest in developing additional technical capabilities.

Desirable Skills

Experience in any of the following areas would be advantageous:

  • Embedded software development: Full-stack embedded engineering, from device drivers and low-level firmware through to graphical user interfaces and web applications.

  • FPGA development: Experience with FPGA design tools and environments, including Vivado, Vitis and ModelSim.

  • Digital signal processing: Knowledge of signal processing techniques and their implementation.

  • Electronics and hardware design: Schematic capture, PCB design and associated mechanical design.

  • Radio frequency technologies: Familiarity with software-defined radio platforms, GNU Radio, RFNoC or related technologies.

  • Research and development: An ability to explore new concepts, evaluate emerging technologies and develop innovative technical solutions.

  • Security and compliance: An understanding of information security principles and working within regulated engineering environments.

For more senior candidates, a broader range of these skills and the ability to take technical ownership of projects would be particularly beneficial.

Qualifications

A degree in engineering, mathematics, physics or another relevant scientific discipline is preferred. Equivalent practical experience and technical expertise will also be considered.

Security Requirements

Due to the nature of the work, candidates must be eligible and willing to obtain and maintain the appropriate UK security clearance, including Security Check (SC) and Developed Vetting (DV).

Eligibility will be assessed in line with the applicable government security requirements and the specific needs of the role.

Benefits

The successful candidate will have access to a competitive benefits package, which may include:

  • Annual bonus scheme.

  • Private medical cover.

  • 25 days' annual leave, plus bank holidays, with the option to purchase additional leave.

  • Pension contributions.

  • Life assurance.

  • Flexible working hours, including the potential for an early finish on Fridays.

  • Additional flexible benefits, including cycle-to-work schemes and will-writing services.

  • Security clearance allowance, where applicable and subject to the required clearance.

Diversity and Inclusion

Copello welcomes applications from candidates with a wide range of backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. We are committed to supporting an inclusive recruitment process and helping talented engineers find opportunities where they can develop their skills and make a meaningful contribution.

If you are an Embedded Software or Firmware Engineer looking for a technically challenging role with opportunities to work across emerging technologies, we would welcome a conversation.
