Senior Platform/Infrastructure Engineer
Salary: Up to £90,000
Location: Woking, Surrey, with client-site work across London
Security Clearance: Must already hold active DV or eDV clearance
The Opportunity
Copello is working with a leading organisation operating at the forefront of UK national security and defence to recruit a Senior Platform/Infrastructure Engineer.
This is an exciting opportunity to work on complex, mission-critical programmes, delivering secure, resilient and scalable infrastructure solutions that support some of the UK's most important national security capabilities.
You will play a key role in designing, building and maintaining modern infrastructure platforms across cloud, hybrid and on-premises environments. Working alongside highly skilled engineering, security and delivery teams, you'll help shape and deliver solutions across cloud technology, cybersecurity, AI, big data and digital transformation.
This role is ideally suited to an experienced infrastructure or platform engineer who combines strong technical expertise with a security-first mindset and a proven track record of delivering robust solutions in demanding, highly regulated environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build and maintain secure, resilient and scalable platform and infrastructure services across cloud, hybrid and on-premises environments.
- Lead the automation of infrastructure provisioning, configuration and operational processes using infrastructure-as-code, scripting and configuration management tools.
- Support the deployment, monitoring and continuous improvement of platforms, ensuring high availability, performance, security and maintainability.
- Work closely with engineering, architecture, security and delivery teams to translate operational requirements into effective technical solutions.
- Provide technical leadership and guidance, helping teams implement engineering best practices and deliver reliable, secure infrastructure.
- Identify and implement improvements to platform reliability, observability, deployment efficiency and operational performance.
- Contribute to security risk assessments and the management of infrastructure-related risks, ensuring platforms meet relevant security requirements and standards.
- Support the full infrastructure lifecycle, including hardening, patching, troubleshooting, maintenance and continuous service improvement.
- Drive automation and modern DevOps practices to improve consistency, repeatability and efficiency across infrastructure delivery.
Key Skills and Experience
We're looking for a technically strong and proactive engineer with experience delivering infrastructure or platform engineering solutions within the defence, national security or wider public sector.
You will ideally bring:
- Proven experience in cloud, platform, infrastructure or systems engineering within defence, national security or other security-sensitive environments.
- Strong experience working with customers and multidisciplinary delivery teams to understand requirements and deliver robust technical solutions.
- Experience in security risk analysis and risk management relating to infrastructure, cloud platforms and technology environments.
- A strong understanding of core infrastructure services, including compute, storage, virtualisation, networking, identity management, backup and monitoring.
- In-depth knowledge of cloud platforms and services, such as AWS EC2, S3, VPC, RDS, IAM and Lambda, or equivalent technologies.
- Strong networking knowledge, including TCP/IP, DNS, VPNs, load balancing, routing, firewalls and secure connectivity.
- Practical experience with infrastructure-as-code and automation tools such as Terraform, Ansible, AWS CloudFormation or equivalent.
- Experience administering Linux and/or Windows Server environments, including system hardening, patching, troubleshooting and lifecycle management.
- Familiarity with containerisation and orchestration technologies, including Docker and Kubernetes.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, DevOps methodologies and modern software delivery practices.
- A strong understanding of security principles and best practices across infrastructure, cloud and platform environments.
- Scripting experience using languages such as Python, Bash or PowerShell.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess complex technical information, identify risks and drive improvements.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to provide technical guidance to colleagues, customers and stakeholders.
Security Clearance Requirements
Candidates must already hold active Developed Vetting (DV) or Enhanced Developed Vetting (eDV) security clearance.
Given the sensitive nature of the programmes supported, existing DV or eDV clearance is an essential requirement for this position.
Location and Working Arrangements
The role will be based in Woking, Surrey, with an expectation that a proportion of your time will be spent working at client sites across London.
The position offers a flexible working environment, subject to project and customer requirements.
Salary and Benefits

- Performance-related bonus opportunities.
- Competitive pension scheme.
- Private medical cover.
- 30 days' annual leave, with options to buy or sell additional holiday.
