Leonardo has not announced a full exit from the UK, but its Yeovil helicopter manufacturing site faces a genuine risk of closure unless the Ministry of Defence confirms the delayed New Medium Helicopter (NMH) contract.
Around 3,000 highly skilled roles could be impacted, including aerospace engineers, advanced manufacturing specialists and programme professionals — talent that is already scarce across the defence sector.
For the recruitment market, this highlights a wider issue: procurement delays directly affect workforce stability. Prolonged uncertainty increases the risk of experienced defence talent leaving the sector or moving overseas, weakening long-term capability and making future hiring more expensive.
In the near term, recruiters may see:
• Slower hiring decisions and hiring freezes at prime contractors
• Increased candidate caution around permanent roles
• Greater availability of senior, niche defence talent regionally
While demand remains strong in areas such as cyber, sustainment and digital engineering, the Leonardo situation is a clear reminder that confidence and clarity are critical to retaining defence skills.
